WORKSHOP BASICS

The wood shop is not what one would call an extremely social setting. We spend most of our time talking to the wood, which could quite easily be translated into "talking to oneself". The conversations are generally interesting and have a pretty good habit to be worth the time invested. HOWEVER, it's a beautiful exprerience when we open the wood shop doors to education and teach others how to have the same lust for the anti-social setting that woodworking has to offer. The greatest part about it is that almost every student that has taken on a task has enjoyed it!

Here a few Elements [or skills] that are a part of the building process offered in our hands-on workshops. You should prepare to be dusted with fine wood shavings, experience decibles at or above a loud rock concert (we throw that part in for free), and have exposure to air particluates and chemical vapors from the finishing product. Fun, right!?

Primary Element :

• Sanding (machine and hand)

• Finishing

• Material knowledge

These elements without question will be involved in every workshop we offer.

Secondary Element :

• Shaping

• Design

• Adhesives

• Drill Press

These elements are involved in most of our workshops, but not every workshop utilizes these skills.

Tertiary Element :

• Steam bending

• Band saw

• Router

These elements are involved in specific workshops. Some workshops apply more than one of these skills.

FOR YOUR PROTECTION :

Please bring eye protection & lung protection. If you choose to bring a pair of working gloves that suit you best, feel free! We will provide hearing protection (aka ear plugs) and nitrile gloves. As far as clothing goes : flannels always suit a woodshop, carefree denim, tshirts, crew neck sweatshirts, and some nice sturdy shoes.

YOUR SKILL LEVEL :

If you've used a screwdriver successfully in the past, we'd say you're good. If you've successfully used a ruler and have great fraction skills, you're doing even better. You can come into any of our workshops and work at your own pace and take home as much knowledge as you desire [and that the subject and time will allow]. If you are somewhat advanced and really feel like you'd like to expand your knowledge in a specific area, please reach out on our form HERE.

PRIVATE INSTRUCTION :

This is time spent with Chris Grohs directed toward a specific skill set or project build in the Terrawood shop. This course is set up by the hour and coordinates with both working schedules of Chris and the student(s). Please reach out HERE.
